St Bartholomew, Blore, Staffordshire

High on the moorland above Ilam, but quite a large church. It is mainly Perp and preserves inside a large amount of medieval and Jacobean woodwork. There is a mixture of square-headed and arched windows, although the chancel east window looks rather odd and is probably Victorian. The screen to the north chapel is Perp, and the chapel is walled off from the chancel, a process that seems to have left the original Perp parclose screen in situ. In the floor under the carpet before the scren are large brasses to William Bassett late C15. No arch from the aisle into the chapel, just a change of roof line. The chapel itself is completely filled by the monument to William Bassett d1601, his wife d1640 and his son-in-law d1616. He lies elevated in the centre, the others left and right, with William's kneeling daughters at their heads. At both ends of the monument four coulumns supporting a double entablature on which are mounted large shields.
