St Benedict / St John Nepomuk, Hradcany, Prague

The other two churches of Hradcany outside of the castle itself were both locked.
St Benedict (above left) is attached to a convent and is quite small, the church basically a large square with a lower and narrower east apse. It has a small bell turret and the C18 interior is said to be fairly simple. The Carmelite Nuns were ejected from the convent in 1950 by the Communists who used the buildings as a hotel. The nuns returned in 1992.
The church of St John Nepomuk (above right) dates from 1720-8 and was built for the Ursuline Order as their convent church. They were suppressed in 1784 and the church became a store. It reopened as a church in 1861 as a military church, first Evangelical and since 1902 Catholic. It is significant as the first church by Bohemian architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer who also designed St Nicholas in Mala Strana.
