St Nicholas, Mala Strana, Prague

There can be few sights better than the grouping of this church, especially from the Charles Bridge and the Malastranska to the east. Dome and tower are the same height, and the church is a masterpiece of baroque design. The dome and tower were the last parts of the church to be completed, some fifty years after the church was begun in 1701. There was an admission charge, which also included an exhibition of paintings at the triforium level. Vistas constantly change as you move around the building, and there is so much decoration and ornamentation that the eye is constantly moving. The frescoes are astonishing and include trompe l'ouil effects. The large central space under the dome is breathtaking. See also
